VOLUNTEER POSITION

Position: Grease Monkey Mentorship Program
Organization: Evergreen
Location: Evergreen Brick Works, Bayview Ave., Toronto, Ontario

Application Deadline: April 6th, 2017

Start date/term of position: Full season (April- October)

Big into bikes and keen on community? We want you!

Evergreen is launching a two part volunteer mentorship program where 8-12 novice mechanics will develop and enhance their DIY skills through an intensive training process, and then pay-it-forward by applying this knowledge and mentoring other novice cycling enthusiasts.

Part (1) Grease Monkey Mentees
In the first part of the program, Grease Monkeys will be provided with intensive training and shadowing opportunities where they will discover everything they need to know to become a bike mechanic. In this role, they will work with Bike Works staff and volunteer mentors as they help visitors repair their bikes during DIY hours and offsite tune-up booths.

Part (2) Grease Monkey Mentors
When the Grease Monkeys have completed their training and feel well equipped, they will adopt the role of a mentor and apply their newly developed skills and knowledge to take a leadership role in the Bike Works community.

Commitment:
Due to the nature of this program, volunteers are asked to commit to 3-4 shifts per month on Fridays, weekends, or Wednesday evenings at Evergreen Brick Works (550 Bayview Avenue) and occasional offsite pop-up locations around Toronto. We ask that volunteers commit to a full season of volunteering (April-October) in order to complete the program and transition from mentee to mentor.

What you bring:

  • Enthusiasm to develop bike mechanic skills
  • Fulfill minimum shift commitment at Bike Works
  • Comfort working with other volunteers and the public
  • Involvement in the Toronto cycling community is an asset
  • It would be great if you have prior experience as a bike mechanic or in cycling advocacy

When and Where:

Bike Works is located at Evergreen Brick Works (550 Bayview Avenue). Grease Monkey Mentorship participants must attend mandatory Grease Monkey training sessions on April 8th and April 9th from 10AM-5PM.

Following this, mentees will be asked to shadow and volunteer for a minimum of 3 or 4 shifts per month at either:

  • Volunteer Bike Build Hours (Fridays from 11AM-6PM)
  • DIY Hours (Saturdays and Sundays from 10AM-4PM, starting April 22nd)
  • DIY Hours (Wednesdays from 4PM-8PM, starting June 28th)
  • Or offsite pop-up booths taking place across the GTA, specifically focusing on community centres, commuter routes and recreational trails

How We'll support you:
Grease Monkeys will receive a mandatory two day mechanical training session (April 8th and 9th from 10AM-5PM). Following this training, mentees will continue to work closely with Bike Works staff and mentors to support their skills development and to keep learning tricks of the trade. They will also receive an orientation package to Evergreen (including Evergreen 101, Evergreen Brick Works In Focus, and access to AODA training). As mentors, they will be supported by Bike Works staff and volunteers to help in the knowledge sharing process.

Perks:

  • Develop desirable mechanical and leadership skills
  • Join a thriving community of passionate individuals
  • Access to free shop time and our Adopt-a-Bike program
  • After 20+ hours, volunteers will receive an Evergreen t-shirt, 15% discount at the Evergreen Garden Market, and a substantial discount at Sweet Pete's

How to get here:
Evergreen runs a free shuttle bus from Broadview subway station, and the 28A Davisville bus regularly stops at EBW on weekends. The Beltline trail, Milkman’s lane, and the new Bayview bike lane make the site accessible by bike. How to get here.

Good to know:
As the title of this role suggests, this role can get a bit dirty from time to time, so make sure you dress appropriately.
