VOLUNTEER POSITION

Position: Community Greening Volunteer Leader
Organization: Evergreen
Location: Richmond Hill / Markham, Ontario

Do you have a passion for sustainable cities and community greening initiatives? Do you want to help lead community greening programming and events such as tree plantings and stewardship? Join a core team of Community Greening Volunteer Leaders (CGVLs) in Richmond Hill and Markham for the coming season! Evergreen’s Community Greening Program actively engages Canadians in improving the health of urban natural systems through hands-on volunteering at greening events in local parks and space. The program fosters a sense of pride and social responsibility to maintain healthier choices for themselves and their environment. CGVLs support our greening events by leading volunteers, providing activity demos, assisting with set up and clean-up of events, welcoming and signing in volunteers at events and participating in the event itself!

What You Bring: You are friendly, committed, engaged and enthusiastic. You have strong communication skills and are comfortable speaking to groups. You’re a team player who brings leadership skills and are able to work with diverse populations and ages. Prior experience with planting or stewardship is an asset.

When and Where: Private and public events will be held in Richmond Hill and Markham and typically run from mid-April to the end of October, at various times – CGVLs should be available weekdays and/or weekends. Volunteer Leaders are expected to assist with event set up and clean up, as well as during the event, typically a 3-4 hour commitment per event, committing to 2-3 events per month from April to October. Additional check-ins (online or via phone) may be decided by your Evergreen staff lead.

How we’ll support you: Community Greening Volunteer Leaders will be provided with educational resources and reading material and are required to participate in an on-the-job training session at the start of the season, covering all aspects of the role. You will be further mentored on site at events by the Evergreen event coordinators. You’ll get regular email updates and news to keep you informed about the program and other opportunities at Evergreen.

Perks: You’ll have a chance to develop your skills (leadership, event coordination, communication, etc.) while working alongside members of their local community, inspiring change in your own backyard. You’ll also be a part of a great team making a real contribution to Evergreen’s goals and mission.

Good to Know: Volunteers are encouraged to make their own way to events. Carpooling and public transit options may be available. Events happen in virtually all weather conditions so be prepared to dress for the weather.

If this sounds like you: Apply online here (application form on top right) and tell us why you'd like to fill this role. We will follow up in the coming weeks for an informal interview.
