About Charlie’s FreeWheels

At Charlie’s FreeWheels, “We aim to inspire a spirit of exploration and to mobilize, empower and engage youth using bicycles as a driver for personal growth and positive social change.”

We understand bicycles as vehicles for positive social change. Our mission is to facilitate youth empowerment and enhance access and mobility for youth. We create opportunities for youth to build their own bicycles and develop essential skills along the way.

The ultimate long-term goal is to create a hub to support youth cyclists in Toronto. To this end, all volunteers, employees should work with the aim of facilitating youth-involvement and empowerment.

All people involved with Charlie’s FreeWheels must work together to create a safe, welcoming, and empowering space. We aim to provide an example of a communal and communicative environment where we can all work together to accomplish things we didn’t otherwise think possible.

Responsible to: Program Coordinator

The Build-a-Bike Volunteer’s role is to provide in-class assistance for youth participating in the Build-a-bike program. Volunteers will work alongside the Lead Instructor, providing support with bicycle mechanics and/or shop maintenance tasks. A key aspect of the Build-a-bike Volunteer’s role is to contribute to making an inclusive, supportive and healthy educational atmosphere for all program participants.

  • Providing “hands-off” assistance with bike building - lessons are included with each class, so all skill levels are welcome!

  • Keeping students focused and on track

  • Positive reinforcement

  • Assistance with program preparations in the shop

Time Requirements:

The Build-a-bike Volunteer is required for each of the following classes this Spring - we ask that volunteers commit to volunteering for a full class, OR any number of days to fit with their schedule. We just require commitment to the dates given.

  • March Break Bike Camp: March 13-17, 10am-3pm
  • After School Build-a-Bike Class: Tuesdays & Thursdays, 5:30-8:30pm, April & May
  • Weekend Build-a-Bike Program: Saturdays, 4-7pm, April & May
  • Day Time Build-a-Bike Program: Wednesdays 12-3pm, April & May

The Build-a-bike Volunteer’s responsibilities will take place at Charlie’s FreeWheels location 242.5 Queen St E.

  • All new volunteers must attend a Volunteer Orientation at Charlie's on the FIRST Wednesday of every month (March 1, April 5, May 3, etc...)

  • Experience working with youth is an asset

  • Experience with bike mechanics is an asset

  • Because of the varying levels of experiences and training, our Build-a-bike Volunteers are not expected to know advanced bike mechanics. All volunteers will have the opportunity to learn more through daily lessons, and by helping program participants to problem solve, and build up their bikes.

Recommended Skills:

  • Basic bike mechanics

  • Communication skills

  • Working in a group setting

  • Strengthen your knowledge of bike mechanics: Volunteers get to sit in on Build-a-Bike lessons and have access to ongoing training opportunities.
  • Volunteer Hours: We will provide letters of support for volunteer hours
  • Access the shop: Volunteer shop hours take place on Wednesdays, from 7-9pm.
  • Charlie’s Swag: T-shirts, buttons, pins, spoke cards…you get it all!
  • Join the Charlie’s Community: Meet new and awesome people and receive invitations to regular volunteer events, community meals and other good times.

Volunteers will be asked to submit feedback on their perception of the program and their enjoyment of the volunteer opportunity. The volunteer’s performance will be evaluated based responsibilities outlined above.
